The BiOEE 2525/BiOEE2526/BiOEE 2527 Patagonia Field Course is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders and challenges of field biology. This course offers a small group of students the chance to gain hands-on experience with ecological field research in a biologically spectacular setting, coastal Patagonia close to the city of Puerto Madryn in Argentina. Participants will spend their time in Argentina immersed in an intensive exploration of the research process, including a series of projects designed partly or completely by the students. In addition to sophisticated training in fieldwork, biological research, and data analysis, this course presents ample opportunities to observe and study the region’s spectacular diversity of wildlife.
The course has a somewhat unusual structure, so be sure that you understand how it would fit into your overall Cornell schedule. As we need to cover classroom content both before and after the Patagonia field component, this is a year-long course with class meetings in both the Fall and Spring semesters. In each semester, we take advantage of the special 7-week course option. In Fall, this course meets twice weekly during the last half of the semester. In Spring we also meet twice weekly for the first half of the semester. In between, we travel to Patagonia for two weeks in January; the trip dates for the coming year are January 5-21, 2022 (these dates include the one day of travel to and from Argentina). To participate in the course and the associated trip, you must enroll in and complete both the Fall and the Spring courses; you cannot take one but not the other.
All class meetings in Spring and Fall are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:05-9:55 AM. This time is necessary to allow students to fit these 7-week classes in around the rest of their academic schedule.
