Expanding Your Horizons outreach

Graduate students Petra Deane-Coe, Stepfanie Aguillon, and Natalie Hofmeister led a workshop in ornithology and evolution for 9th-grade girls from across New York as part of Cornell’s Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference this past Saturday. Stepfanie managed a hands-on bird-banding demonstration while lab members Jen Walsh, Dave Toews, and Sahas Barve worked the nets. In the Ornithology Collection, girls practiced building evolutionary trees using starling specimens with Natalie and lab postdoc Gavin Leighton. Petra created an Evolution Simulator game where the girls learned about selection and drift with Scott Taylor’s help. We’re already looking forward to generating more enthusiasm for birds and evolution next year!
