Warmest of congratulations to recently degreed Dr. Nick Mason for being recognized with the 2018 Marion Jenkins Award by the AOS! This award recognizes “an early or mid career ornithologist who has performed continued extensive service to the society, which includes holding elected offices but emphasizes volunteered contributions and committee participation.” Nick certainly epitomizes these qualifications, having served the AOS in dozens of meaningful ways throughout his graduate years. In fact, the repurposing of this award starting this year — previously it recognized service by a late-career ornithologist — is in large part due to Nick’s outsized level of contribution causing the society officers
to realize that service by students and young professionals is so essential to the functioning of the society.
